University of Oklahoma Groom’s Cake

Before football season even began this year, OU was on my mind. As you can imagine, just thinking of OU is a disturbing idea in our household, as I am from Nebraska (Go Huskers!) and my hubby is a huge OSU fan. But sometimes you make sacrifices to help a friend, and since my buddy Nick was getting married and wanted an OU groom’s cake, think of OU I did.

I’m more of a golfer than a footballer, so I found this sweet photo online that I could use to get the proportions of the design fairly accurate.

football

After baking two chocolate layers and stacking them, I carved them into a football shape using my trusty bread knife and set to the task of icing the whole thing.

Here’s a glimpse of the base coat.

I used homemade marshmallow fondant to construct the laces. I was really pleased with how well they turned out. I also used strips of fondant for the stripes on either end of the ball (not shown, see below).

Next, I used piped stars to create the OU logo (while simultaneously attempting not to feel like a traitor to the real Big Red back in NE. :) )

To finish off the edges of the cake, I added some green ‘grass’.

I was really pleased with the final result. I later found out that Nick and Mary received lots of compliments on this cake at the wedding reception–the main one being that it was even better than their professionally-made wedding cake. Wow! I was flattered to hear that!

Nick and Mary, thank you for allowing me to be a special part of your big day. All of God’s blessings and happiness to you both!

Ooh La La!

Last fall, I was asked to make my first-ever Bachelorette/Personal Shower cake. I wasn’t even sure where to being on THAT assignment, so I was lucky that the hostess sent me a photo of a cake she wanted me to copy.

I made a sheet cake and two 6″ round cakes (guess why) and designed a stencil on the computer using Adobe Illustrator.

Rather than leveling the cakes as I would normally do, I left the ‘dome’ on the top of the 6″ rounds. They gave the cake some body (pun thoroughly intended).

Then I started adding stitching and lacy details to make the shape unmistakably feminine:

Add a little bow and some squiggles for fun, and we are ready to party!

See the nice curved effect created by the slightly domed round cakes? So much better than just cutting a flat cake into a shape.

Megan’s Book

Today you’ll see the fifth and final book from my bridesmaids collection. For the past four Thursdays you’ve seen the books I’ve made for Allison, Zoe, Jacee, and Arica. Book #5 was for Megan, my best friend from college.

Megan is an amazing designer and creates adorable patterns and textiles for a children’s clothing company in Atlanta. Someday I hope the two of us can team up and design our own line of products! In designing her journal, I wanted to make sure and capture Megan’s fun-loving, artsy personality.

Megan’s favorite colors are shades of teal, aquamarine, blue, etc. I made her book cover from an aquamarine bookbinding cloth that has a slight shimmer to it. I also added a contrasting, hot pink satin ribbon as a page marker:

Before wrapping the boards with the bookbinding cloth, I cut grooves into the Davy board to give them a beveled effect.

Like Jacee’s book, I used plastic marquee letters to spell out Megan’s name.

What did I love best about Megan’s book? The wild paste papers! I found this amazing paisley paper that coordinated perfectly with the teals, pinks, and blues of the book.

It was great fun being able to make these books for my dearest friends. Journals make a great gift for anyone, from bridesmaids to moms to teachers to significant others. If you’re stumped about what to get someone as a gift, contact me and I can help you come up with the perfect gift for your special someone!

Arica’s Book

By now, you’ve seen the books I made for three of my five bridesmaids: Allison, Zoe, and Jacee. Book #4 was for my sister Arica (fyi: it’s pronounced like Erica).

Making Arica’s book proved to be the most challenging. Arica is a very talented writer and loves to journal, so through the years I have made several different journals for her. The trick this time around was to do something completely different from all the other journals I’ve made for her in the past.

For starters, I used a metallic book binding paper that looks either blue…

bluebook

…or silver, depending on the lighting.

silverbook

For the paste papers, I used a blue scrapbooking paper that featured squares with rounded corners squares. This motif echoed the square shape of the book itself. I also placed the spine at the top of her journal, rather than at the left-hand side.

cover

As with the other bridesmaids books, I embellished Arica’s name on the cover. For hers, I used brads with adhesive letters.

Next Thursday I will be showing the 5th and final book in the bridesmaids series. Be sure and check back to see what I made for Megan!

Jacee’s Book

Jacee is one of my dearest friends, so it was only natural to choose her to be my Maid of Honor when I got married this past May. For the last two weeks, I’ve shown you the books I’ve made for Zoe and Allison, two of my other bridesmaids.  Today’s post is showcasing the book I made for Jacee.

For years, I’ve been hanging on to this piece of amazing, deep red bookbinding cloth. Since Jacee is a classic beauty, I decided that making a book for her was the perfect excuse to use the paper. Unfortunately, you can’t tell from the photos that the paper has a shimmer to it…sort of a metallic, ruby-slippers quality.

cover

I used black satin ribbon to make tie closures:

Normally, I don’t like pairing black and brown, but this time it just worked. I had some chocolate brown paper with white, red, and beige polka dots that complimented the cover perfectly.

And, like all the bridesmaids books, I personalized Jacee’s as well. For hers, I used little plastic cutouts known as marquee letters:

So far, you’ve seen 3 of the 5 books that I made for my bridesmaids. Check back next Thursday and see the book I made for my sister Arica.

Zoe’s Book

My cousin Zoe and I have been friends since we were born. Zoe’s just five months older than me and despite the fact that we grew up in opposite parts of the world (Me: Nebraska, Zoe: Indonesia) we’ve always been close. Naturally, I chose her to be my Matron of Honor when I got married this past May. Last week, I showed you the book I made for my sister Allison as her bridesmaid gift. Today’s post is showcasing the book I made Zoe.

Before I started creating their books, I did some ‘investigating’ and casually asked the girls their favorite colors. One of Zoe’s was moss/apple green. I had the perfect paper in mind to use for the paste papers, so I started there and designed the rest of the book around the paste pages. Here’s the final product:

I used a moss/apple green paper that featured hints of burnt orange and maroon as well as straight lines and concentric circles.

The cover was a paper-backed flocked material that mimicked suede:

I embellished Zoe’s name using letter brads. This particular kind has a metal base and then the letters are selected from a clear sheet and glued to the face of the brads.

Embellishments

This was #2 of 5 books that I made for my girlfriends. I so enjoyed designing each book especially for them. Come back next Thursday and see the book I made for Jacee, my Maid of Honor.

Allison’s Book

I believe that a journal is a timeless gift. And creating them by hand is an act of love. While I was planning my wedding, it was very important to me to choose bridesmaids’ gifts that I knew my friends would like, as well as something that would reflect their uniqueness and also be something they would hang on to for years.

Naturally, I chose to create handmade journals for each of them. Shown below is the journal I made for my youngest sister, Allison.

I used red suede for the cover to give the book a soft yet durable feel. The final size of the book was roughly 5″ x 8″:

I used a blocky, primary-colors print for the inside paste pages:

I embellished the cover using alphabet brads to spell out Allison’s name:

I alternated white and red paper to create the pages, as you can see from the photo above.

Come back next Thursday and see the book I made for Bridesmaid #2!

Meadows/Light Wedding

On August 7th, my amazing sister-in-law Anna Meadows married her warrior, Cody Light. I was honored when they asked me to design their wedding cake. The following photos were taken by Anna and Cody’s friend Abi Martin, an exceedingly fabulous photographer. Thank you, Abi, for capturing their day so perfectly and for being so gracious to share your images with me! (Check out her blog, y’all!)

Anna and Cody wanted a simple “cutting cake” since their reception featured various dessert stations and they wouldn’t need much cake to satisfy the guests. I made a two-tier classic white wedding cake with almond buttercream icing.

To give the cake some height, I placed it on the Luigi Bormioli footed glass pedestal I received for my own wedding this past May. I was so excited to finally have a chance to use it! It made transporting the cake a little precarious, but we made it to the church in one piece! (whew)

closeup

Since peacock feathers were the inspiration for their wedding colors, I adapted a technique I created last summer to make a one-of-a-kind cake topper. My mother-in-law and I must have spent two hours in Hobby Lobby searching for just the right beads and feathers.

I also tried my hand at making marshmallow fondant for the first time. MANY thanks to the woman who posted this tutorial on YouTube…it was incredibly helpful and my fondant turned out perfectly! I’m normally NOT a fondant fan, but the homemade marshmallow kind is yummy. I rolled it into balls to cover the floral pick that contained the wires and feathers.

I have to admit that I love this beading technique. It is simple to create, yet elegant at the same time. I also LOVE this picture that Abi took.

Anna and Cody looked so cute cutting their cake and sharing the first bite. I made sure to save the top tier for them to enjoy on their first anniversary. Congratulations, Mr. & Mrs. Light! Thank you for asking me to be an important part of your special day. Love you both dearly.

Flower Power

Amanda, my amazingly talented photographer friend agreed to trade me a photography session in exchange for a cake. The photos she took were INCREDIBLE and no cake in the world would have been a fair trade, but I gave it a shot anyway! :)

I was provided with a plate that was the inspiration for a bridal shower Amanda was co-hosting.

plate

I LOVED the leafy vines on the plate, and used them as my inspiration for the piping.

I did my best to imitate the colorful flowers that made the plates so cheery and bright.

I was pleased with the final result…

and it even looked quite a bit like the illustrations from the plate! Amanda and the other hostesses were quite pleased with how the cake turned out.

So fun to be able to trade favors with talented friends. A win-win situation, I’d say! What about you…what skills do you have? Let’s make a trade. :)

A Camouflage Wedding: Part 2

Last Tuesday, I posted photos of the wedding guest book I made for my friends Mégan and Angel. Today is my chance to show you the cake I created for them.

Alba-3QtrViewB

For their reception, Mégan and Angel ordered cupcakes from Cuppies and Joe for their guests, but they still wanted to include the tradition of saving their wedding cake for their one year anniversary. That’s where I came in. : )

Being from South Carolina, Mégan is a true Southern gal and wanted their keepsake cake to be Red Velvet with Cream cheese icing (which totally matched one of their wedding colors—ivory). Here are the results:

Alba-3QtrView

Alba-SideView

I had seen a knife-dragging technique in a Rachael Ray Everyday magazine, so I gave it a whirl here.

Alba-Knifedrag

It turned out pretty neat, but the softness of the cream cheese icing gave me some fits at first. I’d like to try that technique again in buttercream.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE using rosettes.

Alba-Rosette

They are so pretty and simple to do. I also used my star tip to pull out some icing to make ‘points’ all away around the top and bottom borders.

Alba-TopView

Mégan and Angel were pleased with the results. They didn’t cut into this cake at their reception, so I’ll be interested to hear how it tastes in a year when they take their first bite.

Congratulations, Mr. & Mrs. Alba! Thanks for letting me be a part of your special day!
