Baby Dax’s Cake

I was asked to make a baby shower cake for Lyndi and her soon-to-arrive son, Dax.

The invitation was a mint green with brown and white polka dots, so I used that design as the inspiration for my cake. I made a two-tier cake (top tier vanilla, bottom tier chocolate) with classic buttercream icing tinted pale green.

I’d been wanting to try my hand at using fabric ribbon on a cake, so I did some research as to what I would need to do to make it food-safe. Once I gathered that info, the next trick was to decide how to disguise the ribbon’s seam.

ribbons

I wanted to make some sort of plaque with Dax’s name on it, so I used Candy Melts! I used my computer to print out the perfect letters, then placed wax paper over the top and traced the letters using melted white chocolate. While the letters set, I poured milk chocolate into shallow rectangular molds. Before the chocolate bars set completely, I arranged the white letters.

The little chocolate bars covered the seams perfectly!

Even better, I’d discovered a new way to ‘write’ on a cake!

Flirty Thirty

My friend Jessica was throwing a surprise 30th-birthday party for her husband’s cousin. The colors were hot pink and black, and she hired me to make the cake. She wanted something whimsical, and since I am totally against black icing (yuck), I used my beaded cake style and a spiral black and white cake platter to fit the theme.

Even the fondant that covered the wires was hot pink!

Using beads is a great way to incorporate a color without having to use dark-colored icings. Here, I use both hot pink and black (with a little silver thrown in for kicks) to make the hanging pendants.

Not only was the cousin surprised by the party itself, she absolutely loved her cake, as it was unlike anything she’d ever seen at the bakery. :)

Ooh La La!

Last fall, I was asked to make my first-ever Bachelorette/Personal Shower cake. I wasn’t even sure where to being on THAT assignment, so I was lucky that the hostess sent me a photo of a cake she wanted me to copy.

I made a sheet cake and two 6″ round cakes (guess why) and designed a stencil on the computer using Adobe Illustrator.

Rather than leveling the cakes as I would normally do, I left the ‘dome’ on the top of the 6″ rounds. They gave the cake some body (pun thoroughly intended).

Then I started adding stitching and lacy details to make the shape unmistakably feminine:

Add a little bow and some squiggles for fun, and we are ready to party!

See the nice curved effect created by the slightly domed round cakes? So much better than just cutting a flat cake into a shape.

Baby Lynley’s Cake

Back in January, I had the honor of making a shower cake for my dear friend Crystal, who was expecting her first child, a baby-girl she and her husband named Lynley Kate.

For the color scheme, I stuck with the hues Crystal had selected for Lynley’s nursery: raspberry pink, brown, and two shades of green.

Polka dots and bows are always popular decor at baby showers, so why not roll with it? :) I made a strawberry cake with cream cheese icing and fondant accents.

This was the first time I had used fondant to make bows, and I was pretty pleased with how they turned out. So cute!

Sadie’s Pink Cakes

Not too long ago, my niece Sadie asked her mom why we have noses. Ali replied, “So we can smell things. What’s your favorite smell?” To which Sadie replied, “Pink!”

The girl couldn’t be more right! For her past two birthdays, “pink” has been the only guidance I’ve been given in regards to her cake. Today I am posting the cake from her 2nd birthday AND her 3rd birthday (As you can see, I’m a bit behind on blogging about my projects!)

For her 2nd birthday, I made a two-tier cake with baby pink buttercream and hot pink piping. I added silver star wands and a Happy Birthday tiara.

I used a round tip to pipe spiraled stars on the side of the top tier.

I also made Sadie a smash cake that she could mess up at her party!

This year, when Sadie turned 3, “pink” was the theme again…as well as polka dots.

I tried my hand at making marshmallow fondant from scratch and it worked! I used it to make the polka dots, and BOY, does it taste better than the store-bought fondant! I added a black satin ribbon with polka dots as the finishing touch on each tier.

New York, New York!

My husband Andrew had never been to New York City before, so I planned a trip for the two of us as a celebration of his birthday (September 29). We saw so many sites and famous landmarks and even got to watch a Yankees game and a live taping of David Letterman’s Late Show!

We did a lot of window-shopping, too. Andrew was so incredibly patient with me as I made my way through various gourmet food stores and paper shops. (I tend to geek out in those types of places!) And when the hustle and bustle got to be too much for him, he waited patiently outside the shops so I could finish getting my “fix”. :)

On Aunt Cristi’s recommendation, we made our way uptown to Zabar’s, a huge family-owned gourmet food store.

IMG_2231

BOY, do I love cheese! And this store had HUNDREDS of kinds…an entire section of their grocery area was dedicated to CHEESE!!

IMG_2232

Around the corner from the cheeses was the bakery section. All of their cakes looked so gorgeous in the huge display case (if I could justify the need for a display case in my own house, I would totally own one! I think they are so cute.)

IMG_2233

Petit Fours…small cake, not-so-small price…at $2.89 apiece, each bite costs about a buck (maybe I should relocate?!)

IMG_2234

A couple days later, Andrew and I made our way to Little Italy for an authentic Italian meal and a cannoli! The pastry shop we visited was so darling. Rows upon rows of puff pastry, eclairs, fruit tarts, and cheesecakes.

IMG_2409

There’s the cannoli on the bottom row…so many kinds from which to choose!!

IMG_2410

OOH, and tiramisu cheesecake. Yowza!

IMG_2414

Andrew gave the chocolate-dipped/chocolate-mousse-filled cannoli a try. I caught him mid-bite, and he’s still handsome as ever. :)

IMG_2416

After Little Italy, we stopped at Kate’s Paperie so I could get my paper-fetish fix. I’d looked on their website before we left home, and there were so many products I wanted to see in person. I was immediately awestruck by the amazing decor above their check-out area: flowers, all made entirely of PAPER! Gorgeous!

IMG_2422

If there’s anything I love more than paper and art supplies, it’s organization. Or bulk. Or organized bulk! I saw this rack first. (When I squealed, Andrew took that as his cue to wait outside for me. ha!)

IMG_2418

These floor-to-ceiling displays were set up throughout the store. So awesome!

IMG_2419

Pretty patterned papers!

IMG_2420

Then I saw their letterhead/envelopes station and thought I’d died and gone to Heaven! Bulk. Paper. Organized. And COLOR-CODED!

IMG_2421

If they had had paper cupcake liners, I surely would have fainted.

Now that we are home, I am inspired, re-energized about my business, and ready to grab the bull by the horns!

Meadows/Light Wedding

On August 7th, my amazing sister-in-law Anna Meadows married her warrior, Cody Light. I was honored when they asked me to design their wedding cake. The following photos were taken by Anna and Cody’s friend Abi Martin, an exceedingly fabulous photographer. Thank you, Abi, for capturing their day so perfectly and for being so gracious to share your images with me! (Check out her blog, y’all!)

Anna and Cody wanted a simple “cutting cake” since their reception featured various dessert stations and they wouldn’t need much cake to satisfy the guests. I made a two-tier classic white wedding cake with almond buttercream icing.

To give the cake some height, I placed it on the Luigi Bormioli footed glass pedestal I received for my own wedding this past May. I was so excited to finally have a chance to use it! It made transporting the cake a little precarious, but we made it to the church in one piece! (whew)

closeup

Since peacock feathers were the inspiration for their wedding colors, I adapted a technique I created last summer to make a one-of-a-kind cake topper. My mother-in-law and I must have spent two hours in Hobby Lobby searching for just the right beads and feathers.

I also tried my hand at making marshmallow fondant for the first time. MANY thanks to the woman who posted this tutorial on YouTube…it was incredibly helpful and my fondant turned out perfectly! I’m normally NOT a fondant fan, but the homemade marshmallow kind is yummy. I rolled it into balls to cover the floral pick that contained the wires and feathers.

topper

I have to admit that I love this beading technique. It is simple to create, yet elegant at the same time. I also LOVE this picture that Abi took.

Anna and Cody looked so cute cutting their cake and sharing the first bite. I made sure to save the top tier for them to enjoy on their first anniversary. Congratulations, Mr. & Mrs. Light! Thank you for asking me to be an important part of your special day. Love you both dearly.

Flower Power

Amanda, my amazingly talented photographer friend agreed to trade me a photography session in exchange for a cake. The photos she took were INCREDIBLE and no cake in the world would have been a fair trade, but I gave it a shot anyway! :)

I was provided with a plate that was the inspiration for a bridal shower Amanda was co-hosting.

I LOVED the leafy vines on the plate, and used them as my inspiration for the piping.

I did my best to imitate the colorful flowers that made the plates so cheery and bright.

I was pleased with the final result…

and it even looked quite a bit like the illustrations from the plate! Amanda and the other hostesses were quite pleased with how the cake turned out.

So fun to be able to trade favors with talented friends. A win-win situation, I’d say! What about you…what skills do you have? Let’s make a trade. :)

Tat Cake

A co-worker friend of mine is both a talented graphic designer and an avid music lover. His first tattoo–a stylized treble clef that he designed himself–was the inspiration for his 31st birthday cake.

When planning birthday parties, how have you used icons/symbols to represent the guest of honor?

Happy 75th Birthday!

I enjoy having enough cake-making skills to be able to whip something up for a friend in need. A buddy of mine at work came to me one day and asked me to create a cake for his father’s 75th birthday celebration. I made a chocolate 10″ round with milk chocolate base icing and dark chocolate rosettes and stars as borders. I don’t write on cakes very often, so this was a good chance to practice!
